PROJECT No. 12

Catalogue of "Safety Sheets" and Disinfectants for decontamination of agricultural and food-processing plants affected by floods
December 2002

ABSTRACT:

The term disinfection means group of treatments to paralyze microorganisms by means of physical or chemical procedures, which are to break the path from source to sensitive person. Disinfection can be defined as a paralyzation or deactivation of microorganisms on inanimate objects, inviolate human skin (disinfection of hands), and in environment (water, atmosphere). There are two types of disinfection divided by the epidemiological situation - prophylactic and repressive disinfection.

Disinfection must be carry out carefully so as not to damage or affect objects, environment and people under disinfection. Basic data for classification, application, storage and liquidation of remaining disinfectants are printed on labels and given by so called "safety sheets". Recently, the Czech Republic was affected by flooding. During flooding unusual amounts of disinfectants and anti-mildew agents were applied. In cases of emergency all rescue brigades, physicians, farmers, and managers of food industry must have correct and up-to-date information available, that is, "safety sheets", how to handle disinfectants or liquidate aftermath of unmeant contamination of environment, people or foods by these disinfectants. At the present time there is no issued summary of these "safety sheets", so in case of emergency it delays solving of the emergent problems with particular disinfectants due to low availability of relevant information.

The objective of this project was to create a catalogue of disinfectants in use for disinfection and deactivation of mildews, based on the compounds and activities of these disinfectants, and then to find particular "safety sheets" of these disinfectants in productive and distributive sphere. Even if introduced catalogue of disinfectants and "safety sheets" is not complete, it can assist to solve substantial number of problems associated with disinfectants and anti-mildew agents, which can occur in flooded areas. Subsequently, it will be necessary to keep solving of parallel project whose subject will be to create full-scale catalogue of "safety sheets" which will be up-to-dated every year and also will be available as a digital data.
